Sassone Tartufi at the 1st ”Tartufo di Calabria” Convention

On May 28, the first National Conference ”Tartufo di Calabria” (“The Truffle of Calabria”) has took place in Rende, in Cosenza. It was a unique occasion to celebrate the treasures of our land and we, as Sassone Tartufi, have been invited to participate as representatives of excellence in production.

The conference, organized in association with the Region of Calabria, Associazione Tartufi Calabria and CREA ( the Council for Research in Agriculture and Analysis of Agricultural Economics) was attended by representatives of institutions, industry experts, trade associations and enthusiasts.

All gathered at CREA headquarters in Rende with the aim of creating a space for discussion on issues vital to the enhancement and protection of our territory. A panel discussion where science, sustainability and entrepreneurship merged, touching on load-bearing themes that ranged from the production and respect of our products, starting from the techniques of cultivation and harvesting of the Truffle to the environmental and socioeconomic impact on the territory.

The conference was also the perfect opportunity to present the experimental truffle farm created by CREA – Foreste e Legno at the Li Rocchi Estate in Rende.

The truffle farm consists in an area of about 1 hectare that houses about 160 trees belonging to certified native forest species (such as Holm Oak, Oak, Poplar, Hornbeam and Downy Oak) inoculated with Summer Truffle spores. It will be a place for experiments and studies aimed at improving truffle cultivation in our territory, both quantitatively and qualitatively, as well as a sustainable alternative that allows most truffles to be grown without having to damage its habitat and the ecology of the areas where truffles grow.

In addition to this, there have been opportunities for training and education for aspiring truffle growers, truffle hunters and truffle dog trainers, as well as with schools and students to educate young people about the potential and respect for our land and its products.

Truffle Harvest in Calabria

With hundreds of kilos harvested each season, the Truffle of Calabria is increasingly becoming recognized and established by enthusiasts and experts, so much so that it is no longer surprising to hear it mentioned alongside other iconic regions such as Tuscany or Piedmont.

Our territory, especially Calabria but in general the Calabro-Lucano Apennines, offers the ideal conditions (altitude, humidity and climate) for the full maturation of varieties such as Tuber Aestivum (Summer Black Truffle or Scorzone), Tuber Uncinatum, (Winter Uncinato Truffle) or Tuber Melanosportum (Black Truffle) and Tuber magnatum (White Truffle).

Our Truffles or a proper treasure of the land, capable of attracting fans and professionals from all Italy and beyond. As Sassone Tartufi, we are honored to participate in this great awakening of our area, providing stimulus for new opportunities to meet and grow. Our goal is tobring a greater awareness in the consumer and market players, increasing not only the quality of the product but also the quantity and in this way satisfy those who want to know, taste and celebrate our Truffle.

We at Sassone Tartufi are proud not only of the results brought by this first conference, but also just to have been part of it as experts in the field who help spread the tradition and products of our region to all parts of the world.

A big step that adds up to many others we take every day to tell and protect something we consider much more than a job: a real intense passion.
